A bane about studying in international universities is important for a slew of examinations like the TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT etc.
This can make it a difficult job for students who often appear for these tests repeatedly to earn better scores and gain admission into top universities.
To help make it simpler for college students to gain admission easily, some universities in Canada have started waiving off the need of scores for these examinations. One popular waiver is the IELTS.
Why Did Canada Choose This?
Canadian universities have found that students that have completed their degrees from a recognized educational institution and still have received their instructions in English often show a great amount of English knowledge – whether it is reading, writing or speaking skills.
Hence, they believed it made sense to get rid of the need of the English Language Proficiency Test like the IELTS with a minimum score requirement of 6, to let students apply for higher education in Canada.
Top Universities in Canada That Do Not Require IELTS Scores
Some of the general rules governing the non-requirement IELTS scores are that students are either native English speakers or, students migrating from non-English countries have received the formal degree education of several consecutive years in English. Moreover, students that have completed either an O-Level or perhaps a-level examination also earn an IELTS exemption.
On the other hand, keep in mind that individual universities have their own set of exemptions and to prove applicant’s English language proficiency. The following is a directory of universities in Canada that offer this exemption:
- University of Saskatchewan
- Brock University
- Carleton University
- University of Winnipeg
- University of Regina
- Memorial University
- Concordia University
Any Visa Problems with the IELTS exemption?
Canada recently announced new student visa regulations that will not only help make sure that international students genuinely study at Canadian’s universities, but also offers them certain degrees of freedom to work. For instance, while earlier prospective students only required to show a work study to work in Canada, now they should prove their enrollment in a university that accepts international students to be eligible for a visa.
Hence, students looking for visas without providing IELTS scores must ensure their enrollment in the University of their choice doesn’t require IELTS papers. Even though, the University does provide them with a letter of admission, students may provide supporting documents to prove their English Language Proficiency when applying for a student visa.
Also, students cannot stay on a study permit beyond three months (90 days) of completing their course. This idea was to ensure that students do not switch to short-term programs after signing up for a long-term degree course.
Such moves with strict regulations is set to help Canadian authorities control the inflow of study permit holders not wanting to pursue studies, and instead ensure that genuine students are issued student visas.
This move is expected to help Canada eliminate the institutions of poor quality and give high-standard education to international students seeking quality education in Canada.

Good day,
I have been struggling with getting a masters degree in mathematics for a while now, I did get admission from a University in US with full tuition award but couldn’t attend due to some disappointments. I have a CGPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 Scale by WES and an averagely good score in GRR general test, No TOEFL/IETLS but a grade of C6 in WAEC. Please I will be glad if you can help with information and assistance that will land me in Canada for MSC.
Information to what school in Canada? Every school is different when you talk about requirements for admission. Thanks
