Oscar Pistorius Found Guilty in Murder of Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp

Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of murdering his girlfriend after a South African court overturned the earlier manslaughter conviction, saying the lower court had misinterpreted the South Africa’s law.

A court found Pistorius guilty last year of shooting his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, dead by having a locked toilet door on 14, 2013. Pistorius argued that they thought she was a thief. Legal court convicted him of manslaughter, the same as culpable homicide, and sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment. But he premiered per year into his sentence, and allowed to spend most of his term under house arrest until this Thursday.

A legal court ruled the lower court had incorrectly applied the principle of “dolus eventualis” or whether a perpetrator, in this case Pistorius, foresees indirect consequences, Steenkamp’s death, being a chance for actions.

The ruling from the appeals court means Pistorius will have to reappear in the South Africa court and will be re-sentenced. He faces a minimum of 20 years imprisonment, but judges can put some discretion, the BBC reported.

In a statement, Pistorius’s family said these folks were examining their options for next steps. The BBC adds he can appeal “only if his lawyers are convinced that the appeal judges violated his constitutional rights. In an essence that in a high threshold, and hard to meet case might arise”

Pistorius, 29, is often a double-amputee track star who had previously been dubbed Bladerunner. She has run both in the Olympics as well as the Paralympics.
