How to Find Study Abroad Scholarships in Nigeria

As a Nigerian, you should know that scholarships for international students are not easy to come by.

Even the scholarships for graduate school and masters scholarships are tough to find, especially for those students that want to study abroad.

However, the easiest way to find out about different cultures and gain a broader understanding of different issues is to study in a foreign country.

Oftentimes, students cannot qualify for the study abroad scholarship programs. That is why, study abroad scholarships are now offered by a number of institutions and organizations.

Students usually are not financially secure. Most of them are financially dependent on their parents. If some of them do work, most of the money they earn goes to the expenses like tuition fees and other education-related expenses.

Consequently, although overseas study is an excellent experience, most students can’t afford it in Nigeria. A scholarship can help students study abroad by providing the required available scholarships to study for the students to use.

In order to find scholarships to study overseas, you can start by visiting the school’s financial aid office. They usually have a compilation of available study abroad scholarships.

Searching online is another quick and convenient strategy for finding study abroad scholarships that you may qualify for.

What’s required to be eligible for a scholarship varies, in general a prospect need to have A’s and B’s and become an honorable student. You may be required to present your credentials during the application process.

Scholarships for overseas study are offered by government entities, state, or private institutions. For example, the USA Security Education Program (NSEP) and the Fulbright Program, which are both funded by the federal government offer grants and fellowships for undergraduate and graduated students to study and carry out research abroad.

Government organizations in other countries in Africa also offer scholarship and grants to study abroad, such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

A few states in places like Canada and USA offer college students the opportunity to study abroad by providing loans or student grants according to their need or merit. The grant can include tuition waivers or work programs, but it depends on your academic qualifications.

Universities and colleges also provide scholarships on a need and/or merit basis. Institutional aid usually will come from alumni, faculty, endowments etc. Some financial aid from the government can be allocated for study abroad programs, but other scholarships are restricted for domestic programs.

Private organizations, corporations, civic groups and foundations are also excellent sources of assistance for study abroad studies. The Chrysler Foundation and also other big brand companies also give funds for studying overseas.

The Rotary Foundation offers an international scholarship program for undergraduate, graduate and vocational students.

Some public and private organizations provide scholarships for students to study a particular major or the field of study abroad.

Find out about scholarships in your area of study or destination from private organizations in your locality.

Don’t forget funding organizations in your destination country. They may also provide scholarships so that you can study abroad for free.
